Basic Description: The Afghan Hound derives his name from the country of Afghanistan, however, this regal animal is depicted on the ancient tomb walls of Egypt dating back some 6,000 years. The Afghan Hound is an aristocrat, his whole appearance is one of dignity and aloofness with no trace of plainness or coarseness. His broad feet, high powerful hindquarters, shorthaired saddle, speed and strength enable this dog to work with agility in hill country, where he has been used on leopard, gazelle and hare. His profuse silky, thick, stand off coat protects him from intense heat and cold. Tail carriage is high to enable the hunter to locate him in thick bush.
