Basic Description: The American Foxhound takes his name from his original purpose, that of hunting the fox. It is claimed that kind of Foxhound was imported to the United States in 1742 and since then he has been highly prized by farmers and later by hunt clubs. George Washington had some of these dogs brought over from abroad, and Lafayette sent a few from France. Beware of making the social error of referring to the Foxhound as "dog" -he is first and always a "hound." The hounds are used today, mostly in packs, for hunting to greater extent perhaps in the South and Midwest than in the East. And as everyone knows, they have long been publicized in literature because of their bell-like voices. The "baying of the hounds" is the music that the huntsman loves above all else.
