Basic Description: The Basenji is a short-coated hunting dog from Africa. It is an ancient breed pictured with pharaohs as a palace dog and sculptured in stone as far back as 4,000 B.C. Rediscovered in the African Congo, he was used to point, retrieve and drive game. The Basenji has a wrinkled forehead and tightly curled tail. Elegant and graceful, the whole demeanor is one of poise, alertness and curiosity. Swift and agile, he hunts by sight and scent. Often called the "bark-less" dog, the Basenji is not mute. When happy he will chortle or yodel. Although an affectionate breed, at times the Basenji can be independent and is often aloof with strangers.
