Belgian Laekenois
Mountain West Dog Fanciers
A Guide to all things "DOG" in the Western Mountain States

Basic Description: The Belgian Laekenois is considered, by most authorities, to be the oldest and the foundation of the four varieties of Belgian
Shepherd Dogs. The Groenendael, Tervuren and Malinois, as well as the Bouvier and Dutch Shepherds can trace their pedigrees back to the fawn
wire-hair Vos I de Laeken who was born in 1885.
The Laekenois proved their worth in the late 19th Century in the flax fields of Flanders. Linen cloth was a growing industry and large fields of flax
were scattered throughout the countryside. The Laekenois was employed to guard the fields and quickly gained a reputation for vigilance and
intelligence. The Laekenois were also exceptionally loyal to their families. Years later in the Brussels area, a local shepherd was allowed to graze
his sheep on the grounds of Laeken Castle. King Leopold and Queen Marie Henriette quickly noticed the beautiful, rough-coated dogs used by this
shepherd and, thus, the Belgian Laekenois became the favorite of the Queen. The name "Laekenois" was given to these dogs from the name of
the castle.
