Basic Description: Named after an English term meaning any large dog, the breed has been in Great Britain for over 2,000 years and comes from an ancient Oriental strain. It was used against Caesar when he invaded Britain in 55 BC, and his legions brought it to Rome to fight gladiators, bulls, bears, lions and tigers. They were so useful against wild animals that Anglo-Saxon law required them on large estates. . A combination of grandeur and good nature, courage and docility. Dignity, rather than gaiety, is the Mastiff’s correct demeanor The Mastiffs short face was inherited by the Bullmastiff, Boxer, Bulldog and Pug. The Mastiff was brought to America by the English as a companion and guardian of home and property.
