Basic Description: The Norwegian Lundehund is a small dog, about the size of a Parson Russell. The breed standard calls for a minimum of six toes on each foot which aided them in climbing the cliffs of Norway. More toes is not bad for showing, less is considered a defect. They are extremely flexible and able touch their nose to their spine which assisted them in caves when hunting the Puffin Birds, which were on the endangered list in the late 1800’s. A result of the hunting ban on the puffins was the cause for decline in numbers of Lundehunds. They are often mistaken as a fox because of their size and color. Their exact age is unknown, but thought to be at least the Ice Age or before from DNA testing thus far done. Their name means "Puffin Dog" in Norwegian. They have never been out crossed with any other breed, so they are absolutely pure. The fact that no other breeds were introduced to Værøy, is the main reason which enabled the Lundehund to remain genetically pure. They are a Beta breed that become very bonded to their masters and like nothing more that to sit and snuggle. Today there are approximately 350 in the United States and about 1,500 – 2,000 in the entire world.
